Americans Prefer Debit Cards and Payment Platforms Over Banks and Credit Cards: Report
A new report shows Americans prefer debit cards and payment platforms over banks and credit cards when paying their bills.
The 2026 ACI Speedpay Pulse Report says debit card use for bill pay hit 52.7% this year, up from 40.6% in 2020.
Meanwhile, credit use was 41.3% in 2023 and has now reached 50.3%.
Consumers also favor biller websites at 64.5% and biller mobile apps at 39.3%, compared with 31.4% using bank websites.
Mobile wallets grew fastest with a 17.6% compound annual growth rate from 2019 to 2025.
Generational trends are pronounced, with 75% of Gen Z bill payers using debit, along with 64.6% of millennials.
The report also says billers who deliver visibility, flexibility and guidance can reduce financial stress and strengthen trust.
Ron Shultz, general manager of ACI Speedpay, tells American Banker,
“The data highlights for banks how important it is to reinforce with consumers the benefits of debit to pay bills…
You just don’t have that visibility because there’s not enough connection between the bank and the utility to make that connection.”
