Router Protocol Shuts Down and Burns 303M ROUTE Tokens

Router Protocol said it will cease all operations by September 30, 2026, after efforts to commercialize, license or sell its technology failed. The shutdown will include a planned permanent burn of 303,333,198 ROUTE tokens from the project’s treasury, equal to roughly 30% of the token’s nearly 1 billion maximum supply.

The announcement marks the end of an interoperability project that had already started retreating from its standalone blockchain. Router’s stated rationale points to a difficult commercial environment for bridge infrastructure, where fee pressure and the cost of operating technology became harder to reconcile.

Router Protocol announced the decision on September 4, setting September 30 as the date by which it expects to end all operations. In its announcement, the project said it had been unable to find a route to commercialize, license or sell its technology, according to Router Protocol.

That wording places the closure beyond a product change or a pause in development. The protocol is ending operations after pursuing several potential ways of keeping its technology commercially active, including a sale and licensing arrangements.
